Loonaverse Theory: part 1 / part 2 / part 3 / part 4 / part 5 | part 6 | part 7 (current)

BBC has since confirmed that the loonaverse is shaped like a Mobius strip. What does this mean? It is a confusing way of saying that LOONA 1/3 and loona xxyx are reverse mirrors of each other.

So where is Odd Eye Circle? Apparently, in the twist. Honestly, the exact science of it is not really important to me; its importance is its significance to the overall story. What does it mean to live in the twist between mirrors? By placing the girls of Odd Eye Circle in the middle of two worlds, they represent liminality: their identities are shifting and ambiguous. They have special powers that make them bizarre to others, and that sets them on the edge of society. Their world is the doorway to the next world. So let me introduce, Jinsoul, Hero of the Firmament, Guilty of Swallowing the Sun in the Afternoon

Water is a common, if not The, symbol of liminality. Think of the Styx river which stands at the doorway to the underworld in Grecoroman mythology. Additionally, water fills its container, so its identity is ever-changing. It is also associated with both physical and metaphorical cleansing, used in ceremonies like baptisms or important, era-defining videos like Hilary Duff's "Coming Clean." In the image above, Jinsoul is also surrounded by flourishing plants, calling upon water's essence of life and rebirth: she sees herself as a sinner, ready to be reborn. Her image appears as almost half-human, a mermaid permanently stuck between human and animal. All of these qualities make water the perfect metaphor for going though a liminal rite, but "Singing in the Rain"'s symbolism doesn't stop there!

The fish, especially the ichthys, which is basically an abstract vagina, is easily associated with water, femininity, new birth and cleansing. (Yes, ancient christians were accidentally worshiping pre-classical goddesses every time they drew those arcs in the sand! peep that concept) It's the archetype of Pisces that combines spirituality, dreams, the universe and unity, peace, fish and, yes, feet!

However, Jinsoul's animal guide is not just any fish, but a Betta fish, also known as a Fighting Fish. As the name suggests, they are notorious for their aggressive nature. Most are so territorial that they will not tolerate living in a tank with other fish. So how does Jinsoul deal with embodying two conflicting qualities, the healing of water and the hostility of a predator?

Well how does any warrior princess do it? Fight evil by the moonlight, win love by the daylight! Heroes are not heroes because they are following a black and white morality, but because they do what is "appropriate" to fight the dark side. Read more in my analysis of "Eclipse."

"Singing in the Rain" follows Jinsoul's transformation into a warrior. In the beginning of the video, she is being chased. The low quality of the video is voyeuristic and horror film-like, similar to LOONA 1/3's "Rain 51db." However, by the end of the video, Jinsoul stands confidant. Like in Haseul's "Let Me In," the protagonist must accept her animal guide's wisdom to become her true, whole self. But, it was not without a struggle.

Jinsoul spends the first half of the video searching for something in the manmade twilight of a warehouse. She seems to be very confidant in what she is looking for, even though to the audience it is just rows upon rows of fish tanks with identical goldfish. What is she looking for when everything looks the same? But, she finds it. A series of endless portals, mirrors reflecting more mirrors, The Wood Between the Worlds, a literal liminal space, but Jinsoul found the loonaverse #confirmed loonaverse is fated

In the false climax of the song, Jinsoul tries to enter as a human, but cannot. She quickly realizes that she cannot enter physically, but spiritually. She needs to give up what is important to her: the fish she seems to be coveting. She trusts her animal instincts and uses it to enter the mirror. As she releases her fish into the unknown waters, her physical body also follows: she appears floating in water, then drenched in rain, as she has finally took the plunge.

In "Rain 51db," rain is the white noise of the loonaverse, the hum of the very universe itself. To define herself against this unknown, unorganized matter of the rain, Jinsoul silhouettes herself against it: she pushes aside the rain and sings her song, her piercing cry outward: even "this song is falling right now" (sc). While LOONA 1/3 saw the rain as a constant, Jinsoul was struggling against it to create a space for herself in it.
Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day
Genesis 1:6-8

As discussed previously, Loona often uses the diction of world-building and common metaphors for creation. The Bible passage above is often used as evidence that the world is flat; but, symbolically we can read it as God creating civilized order from watery chaos. We can also see how it creates a world of layers:
"The sun, planets and angels and the firmament." 1475 (Wiki)
Unlike a world of circles, a world of layers has an order: there is a enlightened, heavenly, top and a materialistic, sinful bottom. It is possible to fall through a world of layers, and it is even possible to get stuck in transition, theoretically.

In the following screepcap from "Singing in the Rain," is cut into layers, and the fish tanks create an ordered, structured top half. In LOONA 1/3's "Love and Live," the world is also defined by lines, logic and mathematics. If the top half is LOONA 1/3's utopia, then the fish tank is loona yyxy's distopia, choatic and selfish and to be discussed at a later date. Or possibly refuted at a later time!

In the center stands Jinsoul and the world of Odd Eye Circle, stuck in the middle, but ready to defend, as warriors do.
