The Girl Group Collective: OMG! Who is Oh My Girl?

WELCOME TO OH MY GIRLPALOOZA 2018! The currently active Collective bloggers are big ol miracles so we are taking this opportunity to spread that love. You may have been wondering what this "Oh My Girl" people have been talking about is, and this month, we are going to help you understand.

Oh My Girl (오마이걸) debuted April 21st, 2015 under WM Entertainment, the company behind B1A4, with eight members. They are now seven members, but actually eight still because love never dies. They've been a mid tier group doing pretty well but this year with Secret Garden they've had their first music show wins. Fuck yes!!!!! OMG have had 5 original mini albums, one repackage, one cover album and one unit-but-not-unit album and they're all very much in OMG's "individual color." Their music is soft but strong and fits their fun, mysterious, fairy image. As a group they're very balanced. Their dances are always intricate and they perform them very well and nobody is especially bad at singing or anything (here's where I pretend Mimi gets to rap in every single instead of sing a half a line, disproving my statement.) Oh My Girl is a group that knows who they are and they have from the jump. Not only is their color as a group consistent and unique but each album has it's own literal color concept. Oh My Girl (debut)/white, Closer/dark green, Pink Ocean/pink, Windy Day/forest green, A-ing/blue, Coloring Book/balsam red, Secret Garden/violet, and our new love Banana Allergy Monkey is yellow. They're honestly one of my favorite groups ever and definitely way way up there for active groups now. I am not picky about concepts or genres ever but OMG have such a clear vibe and sense of group unity and style that they're a pillar of my idol enjoyment.

They have no fan color yet but light green or mint (pissing SHINee fans off) have been used as placeholders. The fanclub name is Miracle, just because we are a miracle to them, not because of any tie-in to a song or the group name.

First, familiarize yourself with their singles and music videos. They're all super cute and conceptual and never boring. Liar Liar and Windy Day were made by the incredible company Digipedi, and you can see that influence in the videos following. Since they only have a handful of MVs I'll link them all.

Cupid, their debut, depicts the girls waking up with the hot power of love which they use to enforce compulsory heterosexuality and look adorable doing it. Establishes the Reality of Miyoo.

Closer, which you probably know all about. But you're going to learn a lot more if you stick around here. If you only know this one, you're probably mad that their other songs aren't exactly the same. If that's the case I need you to grow up.

One of my favorite videos and songs of all time, Liar Liar. And a perfect example of the kind of work Digipedi do but we'll definitely get into that later. And we'd be failing ourselves and our brand if we don't do a full analysis of this. This era establishes JinE as the pink whale, an important fact of OMG lore. Liar Liar is about love, insecurity, mistrust, and fear.

In video, music, dance, and overall concept, Windy Day is a masterpiece. As the song moves with the winds of love, everything else does. Eerie excitement is in the air -well, wind- as the girls transform into something truer and more magical.

Their first big break which almost got them their first win, Listen to My World (A-ing), a cover of Papaya's Listen to my World, takes us to a summer day where the girls build their own fun in their own world.

Coloring Book, originally titled Ten Fingers, is the only release where JinE is still a member but inactive. She appears however, in the form of a pink dolphin, making all the 2017 miracles cry. This video tells the tale of OMG having a baking mishap leading them into a magical exciting new world of color proving that sometimes mistakes can lead into adventure.

Secret Garden, the first official ot7 release, has visual and lyrical references to Closer and a sweet whale friend, tying it together with their past works and member. They want to share their "secret gardens," their special things that keep them going.

Her nickname is "Candy Leader" because she's always smiling and energetic- sweet like candy, cute like anime girls. She's composed songs, some cute jingles to share, and made loving friendship compilation videos for all her members birthdays. She truly is a gem, talented, kind, and a great leader. She has the range.

Mimi / Kim Mihyun

Mimi writes all her own verses and has the strongest "girl crush" image. She's often compared to a bear by fans and is a big fan of Thomas the Tank Engine. She's silly and kind of odd but not the most odd of the bunch and is extremely earnest. She doesn't get to show off her dance and rap skills enough IMMO (in my miracle opinion)!! She loves to draw and has streamed it on vlive and drawn the members a lot.

The screams are the members and me.

YooA / Yoo Shia

Yooa, the jack of all trades of the group, might be the one I'd pick for biggest odd ball but only because she looks like a quiet doll and actually enjoys making embarrassing cat noises. She's also probably the member with the most solo jobs so far. She was part of the Idol Drama Operation program and member of Girls Next Door.

Hyun Seunghee

Seunghee is so goofy and sweet and one of the most charming girls of all time forever. And one of the most talented. I have been and will continue to be on record saying she's the best idol singer out there right now. I say a lot of things on a lot of records but I really mean it. If you spend like five minutes of your time trying to get to know Seunghee, you will love her like a friend, I promise.

She was on the singing show Girl Spirit and did some amazing stuff. If you watch one video in this post, let it be this one.

Kim Jiho

Binnie / Bae Yoobin

Binnie is known for being intelligent, she did very well in school despite also being a child actress. Get it! So far she has always had the bob hairstyle while promoting. She's getting pretty popular even though it's kind of awkward when she's trying to be cute. That's cute in itself though. Her voice is unique but strong and in a post-Jine Oh My Girl her added lines are welcome!

Arin / Choi Yewon

Arin is probably the most popular among other idols and collects female fans. EXID's face Hani is famously head over heels for her and like, we get it. Arin is sweet, kind of a jokester but is fully overshadowed by the Sailor Moon monster of the day Kim Jiho, and the epitome of "cute maknae." She can be SUPER SUPER LOUD especially when laughing and probably someone somewhere out there is annoyed by it but to me it's beautiful music.

JinE had to leave the group due to anorexia and took a very long hiatus before that. Not gonna discuss it here. We love her and are proud of her and want her to be happy ONLY. FOREVER. She still loves OMG, her selfies seem to pop up "randomly" via fansites these days, and she's now regarded as the Leader of Miracles. They're all honestly the funny one but she's the totally out there one. She's a fairy or alien or something and she always has a funny expression or comment to bring life to whatever nonsense the girls spout. In Liar Liar she had the line "I'm a lone whale in a pink ocean," and had a ponytail that looked like a spurt of water out of a blowhole so she became the pink whale.
